Stress is bad for women's' hearts

Investigators from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center reported last week that psychological stress can reduce the estrogen levels of pre-menopausal women, thus increasing their risk of premature coronary artery disease.

Women have long been considered to be protected from coronary artery disease until after menopause, because their estrogen levels inhibit atherosclerosis.  In their study, the Wake Forest investigators evaluated the effect of stress on female monkeys.  They found that social stress decreased estrogen levels, and increased the development of premature atherosclerosis by a factor of four.
